Introduction to The Seven Levels of Certainty and Uncertainty (By Liza Braude-Glidde)

BouquetBy Liza Braude-Glidde

An important deep structure in Marc Gafni’s teachings is his use of polarities such as Personal and Impersonal or Certainty and Uncertainty. These clarify central quandaries in the evolution of consciousness and spirituality. I might call this approach to polarities “The Art of Holy Erotic Argument.” It draws from the esoteric teachings of Marc’s Kabbala lineage.

The polarity of Certainty and Uncertainty clarifies the relationship between scientific knowledge and other types of knowledge such as spiritual knowledge. A critical mass of people the world over now see science specifically and truths of the physical and monetary world in general as the only forms of truth. While science and related truths make our lives workable, in order to connect with others and with the Whole in a deep, moral and pleasurable way, we need other forms of truth; those of culture, esthetics, morality and most of all spirit.

The following description of these seven stages is a work in progress based on a transcript of Marc’s verbal teaching given to some of the leaders of the Shalom Mountain Wisdom School. This is the beginning of the modeling of a clear structure that helps spiritual truth, beauty, and morality shine through into the twenty first century.

Through Marc Gafni’s deft naming of Certainty and Uncertainty and their stages in the development of human consciousness and ideas, Certainty and Uncertainty become like Adam and Eve, central characters in the story of the evolution of human consciousness.

Giving simple names to previously esoteric structures is central to Marc’s teaching of Unique Self. Every human life has a unique purpose served by no other individual and every individual has a unique gift to offer the Whole. In honor of these Unique gifts and in the urgent necessity to realize each one of them, each of Marc’s core teachings must be presented in a way that most people have the time and knowledge to access, given a heartful effort.

Based on Marc’s early teachings written in Hebrew in the mid-eighties, Marc begins to outline an accessible framework for embracing spiritual truth while also engaging science and technology fully. Through these seven levels, the depth and power of spiritual reality become accessible to people whose inclination is rational, linear and/or scientific.

Marc’s graceful use of Certainty and Uncertainty as polarities in the conversation of the evolution of human consciousness is is part of his over all  democratization move. But that is for another time.  In this talk, he integrates his own teaching with foundational principles from the German sociologist and philosopher Jürgen Habermas and the foundational historian/philosopher Houston Smith as they were expounded and integrated by in  Ken Wilber’s Integral thought, in Eye to Eye and elsewhere.
